Letter to My Children: Reharmonizing and Fishing

Bean sang out from her chair. “Today is Monday. Today is Monday. Monday string beans. All you hungry children..”

Dragon joined in for the chorus, “come and eat it up.”

Burbling out in unison, the tune resonated off the walls and windows.

“Wednesday, zzzooop. Tuesday, spaghetti. Monday, string beans.”

Oh my beloveds, you are literally reharmonizing yourselves back into being home. Hooray!!*

I joined in for the final verse. “All you hungry children, come and eat it UP!”

Our summer time apart (camp) this year has gifted many unforeseen ripples as we reintegrate ourselves as a foursome. There has been a lot of singing. There has been a lot of tradition comparing: “Do you ring a bell when Wilderness comes paddling in?”

“Yes. We do that.”

“And for Verendrye.”

“Us too.”

There has been comparing of biceps and trip difficulty. “Dragon, I had to portage my canoe for a whole morning!”

Bean, you came home wanting to make friendship bracelets for everyone. Dragon, you have gotten hooked (hehe) by the fishing bug.

August full moon we were by the pond for a bonfire and a picnic. Dragon, you spent the whole time in wrapt attention to see if a minnow would bite your line. I was stretched out on the ground, cloud gazing in gratitude when a flapping sound and a squeal from your sister rent the air.

Quickly sitting up, I looked over.

Flapping flopping flipping - the fish danced along the top of the wooden platform. Bean called out. “Dragon! Catch it! Catch it!”

Dragon’s darting hands scooped up the wriggling form. “Dragon, put it in your bucket. The fish needs to breathe.”

Bean looked sick. “Put him back in the water please. Please put him back. Put him back.”

“Dad, the fish is not moving.”

“Put it back!”

“I am sure it is stunned from its land escapade, let’s lower the bucket into the water and see what it does.”

A pause.

“Bean, it is wiggling and swimming away!”

Thank goodness. I will go back to gazing at the clouds. Thank you for this amazing life. Thank you for this amazing life.

Thank you, my beloveds, for this amazing life.
